Welcome to
Tivo Extraction for Linux Users

Welcome, I setup this page to help linux users extract tystreams from their tivo and convert them to mpeg, divx, etc on their linux desktop.

I've broken this page down into sections for easier browsing, and I've set up a downloads page for quick access to downloadable files.

News

10Jul2003 Lots of stuff has happened since I last updated. I've kept putting off updating because of all the advances. First, an application called TyStudio has been released. It is similar to jdiners TyTools except it has a native linux GUI(requires qt) and has a built in GOP editor. Version 0.5.0 just came out and from what I've read is quite stable and works well as far as sync and output. It also has a bunch of command line apps that you can run. I've got a script coming together with a friend that should automate the process of downloading a show and converting it to your format of choice(SVCD, DVD, etc) and can then be placed as a cron job to automatically do it(minus removing commercials and the such). I'm also talking with jdiner about a CLI version of TyTool for linux. He does have a new version of vsplit that I'm trying to get a linux build of which I will put up here.

Now, on to AVIDEMUX2(download the latest from the forum), the app I spoke of before. Its come a long way and I promise I will put together a How-To for using it for Tivo specific stuff. The reason I've held off is that there have been so many updates to it so quickly, and because of a couple bugs that it had(and made it not so friendly for Tivo usage) that I think have been fixed. So I should have the How-To done soon, though honestly its pretty easy to do.

This brings me to the topic of a work-flow for doing Tivo->SVCD(or DVD for that matter) with commercial removal in linux. I've been working on trancoding for SVCD (since DVDs don't need to be transcoded so its pretty much extract and burn) and have found a process that works, has high quality, and the only downside right now is the final sync offset while mux'ing. If your interested, IM me and I'll tell you what I've got.

All in all I've got a lot of updates to put together for the page as well as reworking some of the individual pages I've got for the new processes. But again, patience, and always feel free to IM me(and you can add IndieRockWork to my list of IM names) if you want to know my latest escapades regarding TivoLinux.

P.S. For you Xbox owners, some great news, you'll soon be able to play tivo shows through XBMP straight off your tivo or straight from the ty file on a pc's hard drive! I can't wait, my xbox is awaiting a mod chip(as soon as they are in stock and I can buy one!).

Email or IM me with questions, problems, etc.

You can IM me at IndieRockSteve, I'm pretty open to chatting, but am not always here, even if my computer says I am, don't take it as though I'm trying to ignore you, I just forget to set my away message sometimes.
